STALKING SOLUTION: DRIVING SECRETLY
The Betty Stanton Story, Part II
By Grant Hall
The name, “Betty Stanton” is an alternate name used by a person for privacy purposes. Her methods of escaping an abusive stalker are provided for the benefit of others who may be facing similar circumstances. This is the second of a series of privacy articles based on an actual case history. Grant Hall, author, Privacy Crisis: Identity Theft Prevention Plan and Guide to Anonymous Living has interviewed Betty Stanton and excerpts from the interview are in quotation marks and included in this series of privacy articles with permission from Betty Stanton.
“My next step after I had settled in was to make my car invisible. To drive secretly as you described in the book, Privacy Crisis. And since I didn’t have a lot of money saved, I recognized it had to be done right because I couldn’t keep running. I had to be someone else and my car need to be anonymous. In other words, I had to be able to drive without anyone being able to run my plates and discover who I was. My ex has a lot of money. He’s hired private investigators for years-whenever he needed to know something about me. So, I knew I had a battle to fight. In order to escape from him, I had to outsmart his investigator. And that was not going to be easy. Still, my life depended on it. I believed I could do it.”
“I traveled to another state, walked in the state office and exchanged my old license for a new one.”
I spent some money forming a trust for the purpose of owning the car I was going to drive. I had sold my old car for cash to a kid at a rock bottom price because I wanted no link to it. This cash with some other money I had saved was used to buy the new car owned by a trust.”
“The new car was registered in the name of the trust. I showed them my passport, not my license as I’m the trustee and a license was not a requirement for getting the plates. I made absolutely certain that only the trust’s name was included on the state’s registration paperwork. And I got a print out of the registration prior to leaving the office so that I knew it was done right. I felt confident. The plan was working. In order to make absolutely certain that they had done it right-because my life depended on it, I used an online service to run my own plates of the new, trust owned car. When the report came back, it said, “Broken Palm Tree Irrevocable Trust,” and I was so happy that I went out for a banana split. And now I am driving secretly.”
